The NPPL (National Private Pilots Licence) can be undertaken at the school for both fixedwing and flexwing aircraft. The minimum requirement for the course is 25 hours (or 15 hours for restricted license). Most students require more than this with the national average being around 36 hours in total. The course involves general flying skills plus navigational training. Five multiple choice ground examinations are also required before licence issue, but you'll be pleased to hear that all you need to know is in one book.

Flying Instructor Courses (FIC) are also available at Balado under the guidance of our CFI Marcus Dalgetty. This course entails 15 hours of flight training and 40 hours of classroom work in order to enable the student to be able to pass the "Assistant Flying Instructors" examination and become an AFI. You need to have had a licence for at least 8 months and gained 100 hours as pilot in command.

Radio Telephony courses and examinations are available at Balado. Simon Jeffrey one of the microliight flying instructors at the school is able to run these courses and carry out the FRTOL (Flight crew Radiotelehony Licence) at Balado. Although this is not essencial if operating from a non radio environment, it is more useful than ever with mircrolights operating to and from larger radio equiped airfields.
